John Ratley – Project Manager

What is the most exciting thing about working in this business? The most exciting thing about working in this business is seeing ideas jump off of the paper and come to life, and I really enjoy it when those ideas bring joy to people’s lives.

What is your philosophy about giving back to the community? My philosophy about giving back to the community is that I feel our purpose in life is to serve God and serve others.

Name a technology innovation that has made an impact in construction or an area where there are opportunities for innovation. There are so many, but one that has captivated my attention for the last year or so is carbon-capturing technology in the materials industry. Concrete is one of the world’s largest producers of carbon, as it is emitted during the curing process. When we capture that carbon, we are able to do two things: 1) we minimize the role of industry in climate change 2) we are able to inject the captured carbon back into concrete, speeding up the curing process and ultimately saving time and money on jobs.

I am also heavily invested in the geothermal properties of climate control and how we can utilize them in building design to make the most of the energy and space that we use in our structures. Frank Lloyd Wright (rather ineffectively) pioneered this type of mindful building and carried on today by architects such as Jonathan Choe with WOHA architects.

Tell us an awesome fact about yourself or the role you have in the company. I’m not sure that I am really qualified to talk about myself in that kind of way.  Anything awesome about me is God working through me, I can’t take credit for anything like that.
