DISD Maple Lawn Elementary

Project Description:

The DISD Maple Lawn renovation project is on an active campus. The construction and renovation activities were conducted to minimize any disruption to the school’s normal working operations. Special procedures are being followed to keep all critical systems functional. Phasing was an intricate part of construction as work had to be completed during holidays, nights, weekends, and times when school was not in session. The site contains Asbestos (ACM); due to this, we have taken extreme measures to ensure the health of the project team, students, and staff. Scopes of work included Earth Work Site Utilities, Landscaping, Concrete, Steel, Interior finishes, Millwork, Roofing, and Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Systems. We included a secure site fence barrier to help keep neighborhood traffic safely away from the project work. This limited access and provided a single ingress/ egress point of entry/exit to implement COVID-19 precautions, as mandated by Dallas County, and as a safeguarding practice for control of this pandemic.

Fun Facts:

The project was Renovation and addition for Dallas ISD’s 2020 3Billion Dollar Bond Program and Crowther’s first project with National Program Management Firm AECOM. The project team worked together to reduce challenges related to current market conditions involving material pricing, lead times, and labor due to the pandemic. This has created challenges in establishing and maintaining budgets throughout the pre-con phase. However, our project team worked closely with trusted subcontractors to stay informed and ahead of potential material pricing increases and delivery volatility for long lead time items, which affected vital trades. This communication has allowed us to stay on budget by guiding the design team on using certain materials, such as wide flange beams instead of bar joists, and early procurement of roofing materials and MEP equipment. The project was finished on time and under budget.
