Moody Outpatient Center
Project Description:
The Moody Outpatient Center is a new, ground-up, six-story clinic and office building at the Parkland Health & Hospital System’s Dallas campus. Construction began in February 2019 and completed in 2021. The addition was built on a two-block stretch previously used for parking between Maple Avenue and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) line. The clinic is 540,000 square feet and is home to the hospital’s new comprehensive breast care center, which is housed on the first floor. The upper floors are dedicated to administrative operations. Self-performance of key trades and off-site prefabrication for the panels that cover the north and south walls – with curtain infills for the remaining sections – saved two months on the schedule. Under the scope of the project, the construction team conducted site and civil work, including underground utilities from the Central Utility Plant to the Outpatient Clinic. They performed extensive utility work, bringing power and hydronic piping from the existing CUP across the street, working in the roadways on all three sides of the building to get sanitary, storm, and city water connected, and tying in pneumatic tubing and fiber to another existing/active clinic on the other side of the DART rail. In a continuing effort to grow diversity and combat construction industry M/WBE participation disparity, our CMAR team set a goal to reach 30% participation with minority and woman-owned businesses on this project and achieved that goal.
Fun Facts:
The project took place during an international pandemic. COVID-19 – During this unprecedented time, we had to deal with all the side effects of COVID-19. We dealt with this by implementing policies that followed CDC guidelines. Due to COVID, attendance for site walks was not allowed. The construction team used virtual reality headsets to allow the client to walk the space virtually to ensure furniture, computer monitors, and equipment were in the right place in their work zone, thus avoiding costly change orders after the fact. The project was completed on schedule with zero lost time injuries.
